After earning his B.A. degree from Grambling State University in 1957, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force, where he was able to work as a reporter. In 1965, Dyer was hired by CBS-2 in Los Angeles. When the Watts riots broke out a few months later, he was able to play a critical role. As a reporter, his career featured a number of highlights, including an exclusive interview with Muhammad Ali and being at the scene of Robert Kennedy's assassination. Dyer was promoted to head of community affairs in 1968, where he worked representing both the community and the television station. In 1999, shortly after his retirement, Dyer was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which he recuperated from for some time. He and his wife, Doris, had four children. Joseph Dyer passed away on February 24, 2011 at the age of 77.;
