She earned her B.S. degree in elementary education at the Miner Teachers College in 1951, and her M.Ed. degree in education at the University of the District of Columbia in 1972. She did additional graduate work at Purdue University. As an educator, Walker served in the D.C. Public Schools as an elementary resource teacher, coordinator of the Title I program, and curriculum developer in reading and language arts. After retiring from the school system in 1983, she was involved in numerous projects designed to develop and maintain the records of African American history. Walker's work was featured in books, newspapers, videos, on TV and radio. She was considered an expert in the study of African American life and history.;
