520 a| Educational advocate Lauranita Dugas was born on December 2, 1926, to Dorothy and Robert Ruchon Taylor, in Chicago, Illinois. Her father was the first black commissioner of the Chicago Housing Authority and the CHA Housing projects were named in his honor. In 1949, Dugas graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with her B.A. degree and married Lester J. Dugas Jr., a businessman who became the first black senior manager for Commonwealth Edison in Chicago. In 1964, Dugas began working for Head Start and in the late 1960s she worked for the State of Illinois' Institute for Juvenile Research. Dugas also worked with the Chicago Child Care Society in 1974, beginning as a supervising teacher and retiring after twenty-five years of service. Between 1989 and 2007, Dugas worked as an educational consultant at Harold Washington College for the Child Development Associate Training Project. Dugas passed away on May 27, 2015.;
