After high school, Swygert enrolled at Howard University, where he earned his B.A. degree in history in 1965. He stayed at Howard for law school, earning his J.D. degree with honors in 1968. Swygert returned to Philadelphia where he worked at Temple University's School of Law. He taught at Temple from 1972 to 1977, and again from 1982 to 1987. At the same time, he traveled to several countries as a visiting professor of law. In 1990, Swygert assumed the presidency of the State University of New York at Albany. He returned to his alma mater in 1995, as president of Howard University. He raised millions of dollars for the university. He also served on several corporate boards and was honored for his work in community development.;
