Abstract Medical school president and government administrator Dr. James R. Gavin III was born on November 23, 1945, in Mobile, Alabama. After earning his Ph.D. degree from Emory University and his M.D. degree from Duke University, Gavin worked for the U.S. Public Health Service for two years, and later served as a reservist. Gavin was then hired as the senior scientific officer of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1991, and in 2000, became the director of the HHMI-National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program. In 2002, Morehouse College's School of Medicine appointed Gavin its president. Additionally, Gavin testified at congressional and court hearings regarding diabetes and health-related policies and discrimination. His achievements have earned him much praise and recognition, including the Banting Medal for Distinguished Service from the American Diabetes Association, and the ADA Public Policy in Leadership Award in 2010. He also served with a number of organizations, including Baxter International.
