Abstract Musical conductor Maestro Paul Freeman was born on January 2, 1936, in Richmond, Virginia, and conducted orchestras around the globe. After earning his Ph.D. degree from the Eastman School of Music and studying in Germany for two years, Freeman began his career as a conductor in Rochester, New York. By 1979, Freeman was music director of the Victoria Symphony in Canada, where he remained until 1989. In 1987, he founded the Chicago Sinfonietta and then directed the Sinfonietta and conducted the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in Prague, Czech Republic at the same time. Freeman's work helped to expose audiences to black composers and to that end, he partnered with Columbia Records to release nine recordings. In 1975, one of those recordings was labeled by Time magazine as one of its top ten classical records. His conducting was showcased on a number of international television performances. Paul Freeman passed away on July 22, 2015, at the age of 79.
