520 a| Labor employee and community organizer Junius Gaten was born on February 28, 1900, in Smithdale, Mississippi, and moved to Chicago, Illinois, at an early age. He attended Haven Elementary School and Chicago's oldest black church, Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church. He began working at age sixteen, for Consumer's Ice Company, where he delivered ice to Ida B. Wells and former black Congressman John Roy Lynch. He retired decades later as the operations manager for the Jefferson Ice Company. Gaten resisted and survived the violent Chicago Race Riot of 1919 and the Palmer House Riot of 1924. He was a union man seeking better wages and equal rights, and helped sponsor an appearance by Paul Robeson. Gaten urged young people to organize themselves for civic and political action, and in his later years, served as Sunday School Director at St. John Church - Baptist on Chicago's South Side. Gaten passed away on November 30, 2005, at the age of 105.;
