| Abstract | Community leader and organizer Lillie Mae Wesley was born in Texarkana, Texas, on June 11, 1921. Wesley moved to Long Beach, California, in 1944 as her husband awaited discharge from the Army. Wesley began working for the Salvation Army while studying at local colleges. In the 1950s, she took a job with the Long Beach Recreation Department, where she became a park supervisor. Prior to her retirement in 1980, she received her B.A. degree in recreation and human services from Long Beach State University in 1970. Through her church, Wesley worked extensively to help elderly blacks receive entitlement benefits and performed other outreach services. Recognized several times for her community service, Wesley became the first black grand marshal of the Long Beach Inaugural Parade in 1992. She had one daughter and one granddaughter. She passed away on May 21, 2010. |
