| Abstract | Professor and sociologist Charles Vert Willie was born in Dallas, Texas on October 8, 1927. One of the nation's leading black sociologists, he specialized in school desegregation. He was class president of Morehouse College where he received his B.A. degree in 1948; his M.A. degree from Atlanta University in 1949; his Ph.D. in sociology from Syracuse University in 1957. Willie served as court-appointed master, expert witness and consultant in many school desegregation cases. An applied sociologist concerned with solving social problems, Willie was recognized in 1983 by the Society for the Study of Social Problems' Lee-Founders for effectively combining social research and activism. As Department of Sociology chair and vice president of student affairs at Syracuse University, he authored numerous books and articles with research specialties covering race relations, urban education, public health, community development, family life and women's rights. He served as vice president of the American Sociological Association and president of the Eastern Sociological Society. |
