Abstract Educator and academic administrator Mary Alice Franklin Hatwood Futrell was born on May 24, 1940, in Altavista, Virginia. In 1958, Futrell earned her high school diploma from Dunbar High School in Lynchburg, Virginia, and in 1962, she received her degree in business education from Virginia State University. From 1962 until 1964, she worked as a teacher at Parker Gray High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and from 1965 until 1980, she worked at George Washington High School. In 1968, Futrell earned her M.A. degree in secondary education from George Washington University. From 1983 until 1989, Futrell served as president of the National Education Association, and in 1992, she joined the faculty at George Washington University while earning her Ph.D. degree in education policy studies. In 1995, she was promoted to the dean of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development and served as director of George Washington University's Institute for Curriculum Standards and Technology.
