Dixon earned his B.M. degree from the Mannes School of Music in New York in 1989, and went on to receive his M.M. degree from the Mannes School of Music in 1991. He trained initially with the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists. Dixon made his operatic debut with the Los Angeles Opera in Tannhauser in 2007. In 1998, Dixon began performing with the Tenors Cook, Dixon & Young. In 2002, Dixon and his wife, opera singer, Alfreda Burke, performed in Too Hot to Handel at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre and the Detroit Opera House. Dixon has served on several boards, including as a consultant with the Cincinnati Symphony and Old St. Patrick's Church in Chicago, and as a member of the Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid Committee on its Arts and Culture Advisory Committee. He has also made numerous television appearances.;
