Abstract Professor Ronald Walters was born in Wichita, Kansas, on July 20, 1938. Attending Fisk University as an undergraduate and receiving his graduate degrees from American University, 20-year-old Walters organized the 1958 Wichita, Kansas Dockum Drug Store sit-in, leading to the desegregation of drugstores well before the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins. Head of departments at Brandeis University, Howard University, and the University of Maryland, Walters enjoyed a prolific career as a teacher, mentor, scholar and voice of black politics. Serving as a campaign manager and consultant for Reverend Jesse Jackson during his two presidential bids and policy adviser for Congressmen Charles Diggs and William Gray, he was much honored for his scholarship and contributions to black leadership. A sought-after commentator on contemporary issues in African American politics, he authored of six books and many articles. Walters passed away on September 10, 2010.
