At the time of the urban civil rights riot in Newark, Tankard, her husband and their six children were living in public housing. In the aftermath of the riots in 1967, she and her family fled Newark and moved to the island of Martha's Vineyard. Tankard's civic and community involvement and contributions on Martha's Vineyard have been significant. For thirty-eight years, she served as vice-president of the local branch of the NAACP. Co-founder of the African American Heritage Trail on Martha's Vineyard, she created Black History Month exhibits for schools and the general public as a lay historian. For years, she was active in numerous organizations.;
