Abstract |
Politician Ronald V. Dellums was born on November 24, 1935, in Oakland, California. After serving in the Marines, Dellums earned his A.A. degree from Oakland City College. He then received his B.A. degree from San Francisco State University and his M.A. degree from the University of California, Berkeley. After years in social work and politics, Dellums was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1970, serving until his retirement in 1998. Dellums was an active voice for peace and disarmament, drawing the ire of Vice President Spiro Agnew during the Vietnam War and later resisting President Ronald Reagan's drive to increase military spending. Dellums continued to speak about issues close to him and has written several books, including his autobiography Lying Down With the Lions: a Public Life from the Streets of Oakland to the Halls of Power. The University of California, Berkeley, honored him with an endowed chair in peace studies. He was then elected as the 48th and 3rd African American mayor of Oakland, California in 2007 and served in that capacity until 2011. |
