Abstract Activist and historian Frank Smith, Jr. was born on September 17, 1942 in Newnan, Georgia. Graduating from high school, he attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he was a founding member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC.) He left Morehouse his senior year, to work with SNCC, organizing and registering black voters in Mississippi and Alabama. In 1968, Smith worked as a researcher for DC's Institute for Policy Studies. In 1978, Smith unsuccessfully ran for the D.C. City Council. He served on the D.C. Board of Education from 1979 until 1984, earning his Ph.D. from the Union Institute in Ohio. In 1982, he won a seat on the D.C. Council and served until 1998. In 1998, Smith became chairman of the board and CEO for the African American Civil War Memorial and its accompanying museum, the only national memorial to the Civil War colored troops. Smith received numerous awards for his civic, community and political leadership.
