Abstract Entrepreneur Alisa A. Starks was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 14, 1960, growing up on Chicago's South Side. She received her B.S. degree and her M.S. degree in journalism from Northwestern University. During two stints at the Burrell Communications Group in Chicago, Starks rose to the rank of vice president. In 1997, she left advertising to help run Inner-City Entertainment, the company she and her husband, Donzell, founded. They launched the country's first African American-owned cinema chain, opening three theaters on Chicago's South and West sides. Alisa and Donzell Starks then began theater projects in urban neighborhoods around the country. In 1999, they helped create the Meridian Entertainment Group, and gained control of twenty percent of Chicago's movie screens, bringing jobs to otherwise neglected areas. The Starks operated their original multiplex investment as community centers. Alisa Starks has been an active leader in several community and civic organizations.
