| Abstract | Lawyer and state government appointee Roma Jones Stewart was born on August 10, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois. Attending Fisk University, she graduated cum laude in 1957. Married to Ronald Stewart in 1960, she spent time living in Burma and Japan. After returning to the United States, Stewart earned a J.D. degree from Georgetown University in 1972. Later she served as a prosecutor for the District of Columbia Corporation Council before joining a private firm specializing in federal employment discrimination cases and before establishing her own practice. In addition, she served for a time as the Director, Office of Civil Rights in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Stewart was appointed Illinois solicitor general in 1987. She continued as a civil rights attorney with a profound interest in African American history, especially genealogy. She was past president of the Afro-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago and the author of Africans in Georgia: 1870 and Liberia Genealogical Research. |
