520 a| Baseball player Al Spearman was born on August 26, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois. In 1941, Spearman began boxing in the Chicago Golden Gloves. Later that year, he won the Chicago CYO 160-pound novice championship. Spearman was a member of an amateur baseball team when friends asked him to join the Chicago American Giants of the Negro League. He was a pitcher for the Giants from 1949 to 1951, playing outfield in a few games for the Kansas City Monarchs. After leaving the Negro League, Spearman played baseball in Mexico, Canada and Japan, where he was one of four Americans in the Pacific League. He was a pitcher on the Stockton team in the California State League from 1956 to 1958, where he completed fifty-five of the fifty-eight games he started. Spearman retired from baseball in 1959 to become a salesperson for the 7-Up Bottling Company. Spearman worked as a courier for IDEXX Veterinary Services.;
