Abstract |
Clarinetist Anthony McGill was born on July 17, 1979 in Chicago, Illinois where he attended St. Thomas the Apostle School and Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. He took clarinet lessons at Merit School of Music, was a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, and attended Interlochen Arts Camp. In 2000, McGill received his B.M. degree from Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music. Before graduating, he was appointed to associate principal clarinetist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, he was appointed principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He performed John Williams' Air and Simple Gifts with Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and Gabriela Montera at President Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009. Following a decade with the Metropolitan Opera, McGill was appointed principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. McGill's appointment was the first time an African American musician had been appointed a principal in the organization's history. |
