520 a| Football star Harry Carson was born November 26, 1953, in Florence, South Carolina. He earned his B.S. degree in education from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. Carson integrated McClenaghan High School where he played football and was senior class president, but he quit football feeling disrespected by his white coach. He returned to football in college. At South Carolina State in 1974, Carson helped to set a college football record for fewest points allowed. Carson was drafted by the New York Giants and played for the team for thirteen years. He was elected to nine Pro Bowls. Carson popularized the tradition of dousing a football coach with Gatorade, and was team captain when the Giants won Super Bowl XXI. Carson was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome in 1990, becoming a leading advocate for NFL veterans who suffered brain trauma. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.;
