He attended the University of Michigan and transferred to Florida A&M university where he earned his B.B.A. degree in business, management and marketing in 1986. Burnett began his career as an entrepreneur in 1987, when he launched his first magazine, Urban Profile, with his classmate, Keith Clinkscales. After selling Urban Profile to Career Communications Group, Burnett helped start Vibe magazine in 1993. He served as a publisher for Vibe magazine until 1999, and then started Vanguard Media Group, the publisher of Savoy, Honey, and Heart & Soul. In 2004, Burnett created Uptown Media Group and published Uptown magazine. When Vibe was relaunched in 2009, he served as publisher for the magazine until 2012. He is considered an expert on African-American buying power, brand building, and marketing to both urban and affluent Africana-American communities.;
