Mazer began her career at Lord and Taylor department store where she was one of the first African American junior executives. She became the first African American fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar magazine where she developed the "Bazaar's Bazaar" and "Lifestyle" sections. Mazer is founder of Total Image Management and the Gwen Mazer Collection. She served as adjunct professor at the Academy of Art University. Mazer was a charter member of the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI). In 1995, Mazer received the IMMIE Award for outstanding professionalism and dedication. She was honored by the Friends and Foundation of San Francisco as a Literary Laureate for her book Wise Talk, Wild Women (2007).;
