520 a| Chemist James Shoffner was born in 1928 and raised on a rural plantation in New Madrid, Missouri. He attended Lincoln University in Missouri for a year before joining the United States Army. G.I. Bill benefits allowed Shoffner to continue school, and he earned his B.S. degree in chemistry from Lincoln University, his M.S. degree from DePaul University and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago. In 1965. Shoffner worked odd jobs before being hired as a research chemist at University Oil Products (UOP). In 1993, after his thirty-six year career with UOP, he became a science professor at Chicago's Columbia College. Active with the American Chemical Society, he served as a national board member, councilor and co-chair of Project SEED, a program to help disadvantaged students pursue chemistry careers. He served as a consultant for the 2006 PBS documentary of famed African American chemist, Percy L. Julian.;
