He earned his B.S. degree from Imperial College of London University in 1989 and his Ph.D. degree from University of Southampton in 1992. Johnson conducted research at the Institute for Advanced Study and Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at University of California, Santa Barbara. His research interests included quantum gravity, black holes, gauge theory, and M-theory. During the Second "Superstring Revolution" of the 1990s, Johnson published key papers on D-branes, a critical concept in the field of super-string theory that allowed for further advancements in theoretical physics. After serving as a professor at University of Durham, Johnson joined the faculty of University of Southern California in 2003. He was a science consultant for TV, radio and theater. In 2005, he was identified as the most highly cited black mathematician by the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education.;
