He received degrees in biological sciences, his B.S. degree from Creighton University in 1961 and his M.S. degree from Loyola University, New Orleans in 1964. Malveaux earned his Ph.D. degree in 1968 from Michigan State University in microbiology and public health and his M.D. degree in 1974 from Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM). He specialized in allergies and asthma during his postgraduate studies at Washington Hospital Center and Johns Hopkins University. In 1978, Malveaux returned to HUCM as an associate professor of medicine. In 1986, Malveaux joined Johns Hopkins University and founded Urban Asthma and Allergy Center. He returned to HUCM in 1989 as chair of the microbiology department. In 1995, he was promoted to dean. Malveaux retired from HUCM in 2005 and joined Merck Childhood Asthma Network, Inc. as president.;
