520 a| TV news anchor Barbara Ciara was born on July 27, 1956, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ciara attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. She later earned her B.A. degree from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. In 1976, she began her career at KZAZ-YTV in Tucson, Arizona, where she became news director in 1978, the first African-American female broadcast manager in the southwest United States. Ciara was a co-anchor at Norfolk-area television stations WAVY-TV and WVEC-TV in 1983 and 1988, respectively. In 2000, she obtained a position with Hampton Roads-area television station WTKR-TV, anchoring three broadcasts and serving as the CBS affiliate's news director. Ciara was the president of the National Association for Black Journalists and UNITY: Journalists of Color. She won numerous awards for national and international reports, including an Emmy for her series Guilty Til Proven Innocent and a 1997 Emmy nomination for Operation Haiti about children living in poverty.;
