| Abstract | History professor Cassandra Newby-Alexander was born on December 30, 1957 in Great Lakes, Illinois. In 1980, Newby-Alexander graduated from the University of Virginia with her B.A. degree in American government and African American studies. She also received her professional certificate in teaching from Norfolk State University in 1983. One year later, she completed her M.A. courses at Old Dominion University before going to the College of William and Mary to receive her Ph.D. degree in history in 1992. During that time she also served as a secondary teacher for Norfolk Public Schools. In 1992, she became an assistant professor at Norfolk State University, and in 1995, she was named an associate professor. In 1995, she became an educational consultant and annual contributor to "Norfolk's Afri'Am Festival". Newby-Alexander co-authored several books on African American history, including Black American Series: Portsmouth and Hampton Roads: Remembering Our Schools. |
