| Abstract |
Educator Geraldine W. Johnson was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on April 11, 1919. She attended schools in Bridgeport before graduating from Harding High School in 1936. She received her B.A. degree in education from New Haven Teacher's College in 1940 and her M.A. degree from New York University in 1959, going on to earn her sixth-year professional certificate from the University of Bridgeport in 1969. In 1961, Johnson became Bridgeport's first black female principal, receiving the number one score on Bridgeport's civil service examination. She became the first woman and African American superintendent of Bridgeport Public Schools. She served as Interim superintendent of Schools in Fairfield, Connecticut in 1986, five years after retiring. In 1976, Governor Ella Grasso designated Johnson as one of Connecticut's 100 Most Distinguished Women. Johnson passed away on November 28, 2015 at age 96. |
