Abstract |
Fashion designer Byron Lars was born on January 19, 1965 in Oakland, California, growing up in El Cerrito, California. At El Cerrito High School, Lars learned sewing and pattern-making, eventually designing prom gowns for classmates. He attended Brooks Fashion Institute of Technology in Long Beach, and Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, but left before graduating. He pitched his samples to high-end retailers, and in 1990, Henri Bendel placed the first order of Byron Lars' line. His 1991 collection won widespread acclaim. Lars was named Women's Wear Daily's Rookie of the Year. Financial issues caused him to end a licensing deal for his Shirt Tales line in 1997. Lars is known for his menswear appropriations, sarong-inspired tying, excellent fit and cut, and pattern mixing. He designed sixteen collectible African American Barbie dolls, and launched Byron Lars Beauty Mark in 2001, popular among celebrities such as former First Lady Michelle Obama. |
