He earned his B.A. degree in social science and music from Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee in 1949. From 1943-1946, he served in the U. S. Army during World War Two. In 1950, Collier began working as a teacher for the St. Louis Board of Education. In 1963, he was hired as a quality control engineer for the Monsanto Corporation's silicon Project. Collier patented the process by which silicon chips are sliced and coated for electronic information storage. Collier pursued a variety of interests. He formed Jim Collier and the Rhythmaires. Collier was the founder of Operation Family and mentored youth in the arts. He also produced his own cable television show and worked as a visual artist. He published a book of his own poetry. Collier passed away on June 1, 2011 at age 87.;
