In the 1960s, Brown moved to Columbus, Ohio, to work for WVKO Radio. Late in the decade, Brown ran for and won a seat in the Ohio State Legislature representing the 29th District. In his third term, he served as chair of the Human Resources Committee. In 1986, Brown formed Les Brown Enterprises, Inc. In 1989, Brown launched his career as a motivational speaker when he received the National Speakers Association's highest award, the Council of Peers Award of Excellence. Brown recorded a series of speeches entitled You Deserve in 1990, for which he won a Chicago-area Emmy Award. In 1991, Toastmasters International selected Brown as one of the world's best speakers and awarded him the Golden Gavel Award.;
