Schmoke attended Yale University, graduating with his B.A. degree in history in 1971, and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University for two years. He attended Harvard Law School, earning his J.D. degree in 1976. Passing the Maryland Bar Examination, Schmoke joined the law firm of Piper & Marbury before working in the Carter Administration. Schmoke served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in 1978, and was elected State's Attorney for Baltimore in 1982, serving for four years. In 1987, Schmoke became the first African American elected mayor of the City of Baltimore, a position he would hold for three terms. In 2003, Schmoke became dean of Howard University's School of Law, and in 2014, he was named president of the University of Baltimore.;
