He attended Western Michigan University where he received his B.A. degree in 1971 and Indiana University where he received his M.B.A. degree in 1976. Lewis joined Harris Bank as a commercial banking trainee out of graduate school. In 1979, he was promoted to commercial banking officer. In 1981, he was named the assistant vice president of Harris Bank. He was promoted to vice president in 1983, serving as a senior commercial banker. In 1986, he was promoted to team leader of the special industries group which was responsible for healthcare, education, and tax-exempt institutions market. In 1994, Lewis was elected senior vice president and market executive. In 1998, Lewis was promoted to executive vice president at Harris Bank N.A. He sat on several boards including Chicago United, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and the Western Michigan University Foundation.;
