She attended Mills Elementary School and Mansfield Junior High School. Johnson graduated from Tucson High School in 1968 and attended the University of Arizona. Johnson was the first woman and the first African American to write for the ten o'clock news in Tucson, Arizona. In 1973, Johnson joined WFAA-TV in Dallas and remained there for over 12 years. There, Johnson became the first woman, first African American and highest paid local news anchor. She left the television in 1984 to start her own business. Later, Johnson worked as morning news anchor at radio station KKDA in Dallas, Texas. She also served as the host of a weekly community affairs show Positively Texas on KTVT-TV in Dallas.;
