Abstract Civic leader and nonprofit executive John Wesley Mack was born on January 6, 1937 in Kingstree, South Carolina. Mack attended North Carolina A&T State University earning his B.S. degree in applied sociology in 1958. Mack obtained his M.A. degree in social work from Clark Atlanta University in 1960. That year, Mack co-founded and was vice-chairman of the Commission on Appeal for Human Rights. Mack moved to Oxnard, California to accept a social work fellowship at Camarillo Hospital. In 1964, Mack became executive director of the Urban League in Flint, Michigan. In 1969, he became president of the Los Angeles Urban League where he served until retirement in 2005, the longest tenure of anyone. Under Mack, the Los Angeles Urban League became one of the country's most successful nonprofits. In the 1990s, Mack served as Fellow in Residence at Harvard University. In 2005, he was Los Angeles Commission president.
