| Abstract | Author, cactivist, and museum founder James Cameron was born February 23, 1914, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Cameron attended DaPayne School in Marion, Indiana. On August 7, 1930, Cameron left his friends Tommy and Abe during a robbery that turned into a murder. All three were arrested. The Ku Klux Klan stormed the jail and lynched his friends. They had a rope around Cameron's neck but, a woman in the all-white crowd shouted that Cameraon didn't do it. He is the only known lynching survivor. He was convicted as an accessory and paroled in 1935. Cameron wrote about his experience in his 1983 memoir, A Time of Terror. In 1988, he founded America's Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee, that displayed racial memorabilia he had collected, including a portion of the rope that almost killed him. In 1991, Cameron was officially pardoned by the State of Indiana. James Cameron passed away on June 11, 2006. |
