| Abstract | Columnist and editor Colbert I. King was born on September 20, 1939 in Washington, D.C. King graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1957 and earned his B.A. degree in government from Howard University in 1961. After a stint in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, King served as special agent for the U.S. State Department, but left because of his objections to Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO). As a fellow at Health Education and Welfare in 1970, King publicized the sickle-cell anemia crisis. King was deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury Department. In 1979, King was appointed executive of the World Bank. King became vice president at Riggs National Bank in 1980. In 1990, King joined the editorial board of the Washington Post. He started writing a weekly column in 1995 and in 2000, was appointed deputy editor. In 2003, King received the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary. |
