520 a| Nonprofit executive Sokoni Karanja was born Lathan Johnson on January 7, 1940 in Topeka, Kansas. He attended Ft. Scott Junior College and earned his B.A. degree from Washburn University in 1961. Karanja received his M.S. degrees from the University of Denver, Atlanta University, and the University of Cincinnati. Karanja conducted dissertation research in Tanzania and received his Ph.D. in urban policy from Brandeis University in 1971. As an Adlai Stevenson fellow at the University of Chicago in 1971, Karanja received funding for The Center for New Horizons which he founded that same year. The center, which has twenty-two sites and serves over two thousand families, offers many services including early childhood education, childcare, senior care, employment programs and leadership training. A national leader on child development, Karanja co-chaired the Grand Boulevard Federation and the Child Welfare League of America's Community Building Advisory Committee. In 1993, Karanja received a MacArthur fellowship.;
