Clayton earned her B.A. degree from the University of California-Berkeley; her M.S. degree in library and information sciences from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont; and her Ph.D. degree from Sierra University in Riverside, California. She began her career as a librarian at the University of Southern California, and then at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is well known for the extensive collection of literature, music and other cultural artifacts that she amassed over four decades. The collection was housed at the Western States Black Research and Cultural Center in the Mayme A. Clayton Library and Cultural Center. It contained more than twenty thousand pieces, including signed works by author Zora Neale Hurston; handwritten notes from George Washington Carver; and a book of poems by Phillis Wheatley. Mayme Clayton passed away on October 13, 2006 at age 83.;
