| Abstract | Author and playwright, Pearl Michelle Cleage was born December 7, 1948, in Springfield, Massachusetts. She began college at Howard and transferred to Spelman College in Atlanta where she earned her B. A. degree in 1971. She began her career as a writer and playwright-in-residence at Spelman. Her works focus on the intersection of sexism and racism, including domestic violence in the black community. She is the author of many novels, plays and essays. Her novel What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day (1997) was a 1998 Oprah Book Club selection. Other novels include I Wish I Had a Red Dress and Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do (2003). Her plays include Blues for an Alabama Sky (1999) and We Speak Your Names: A Celebration (2006) co-authored with her husband Zaron W. Burnett. As an essayist, many articles and compositions by Cleage appeared in Essence, Ms., Vibe and similar publications. |
