Abstract |
Sociologist Iva A. Carruthers was born April 5, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois. Carruthers earned her B. A. degrees in sociology and French from the University of Illinois at Chicago; and, her M.A. in counselor education and her Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois; and, her M.Div. degree in theological studies from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Carruthers was a sociology professor at Northeastern Illinois University where she launched the information and educational technology firm, Nexus Unlimited. She was a delegate to the 2001 United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Racial Intolerance. She was also named president of the Urban Outreach Foundation. Carruthers received numerous awards, postdoctoral fellowships, and honors, including the 1999 Life Achievement Award from Northeastern Illinois University. She spoke internationally and served as a trustee for several organizations. She is the author of The Church and Reparations - An African American Perspective. |
