In 1961, while attending Albany State College, Reagon was arrested during a civil rights demonstration. She joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) Freedom Singers after being suspended from the university. Reagon later graduated from Spelman College with her B.A. degree in history and earned her Ph.D. degree in U.S. history from Howard University. In 1973, she founded Sweet Honey in the Rock, a renowned African American a cappella quintet, composing and producing much of the group's repertoire. She has also composed music for several film projects, including the Emmy-winning We Shall Overcome. From 1974, she worked as a folklorist and curator for the Smithsonian Institution and beginning in 1993, was a distinguished professor of history at American University. Reagon's scholarly work focused on African American music and the songs of the civil rights movement.;
