Abstract |
University president and education advisor Samuel Myers was born April 18, 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland. Myers earned his A.B. degree in social sciences from Morgan State College in 1940 and his M.A. degree from Boston University in 1942. After serving in World War II, he attended Harvard University where he received his Ph.D. degree in economics in 1949. After working at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Myers joined Morgan State as professor and chair of the Social Sciences Department. From 1963 to 1967, he served as an advisor on inter-American affairs with the U.S. State Department before assuming the presidency of Bowie State College. He retired in 1977 to lead the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education and helped to secure passage of Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Beginning in 1998, Myers was chairman of Minority Access Incorporated which worked to diversify campuses and corporate work sites. |
