| Abstract | Professor and organic chemist Samuel Massie was born on July 3, 1919 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Graduating from high school at age thirteen, he attended AM&N College of Arkansas. There he received his B.A. degree in chemistry. He then attended Fisk University and Iowa State University where he received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, respectively, in organic chemistry. While in Iowa, Massie was invited to work on the Manhattan Project on the team that built the nation's first atomic bomb. After earning his Ph.D., Massie returned to Fisk University. In 1966, Massie became the first African American to teach at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he remained until 1994. Throughout his career, Massie was active in helping underprivileged youth. Massie was awarded the White House Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award and the NAACP Freedom Fund Award. Massie passed away in April 10, 2005 at age 85. |
