He was granted early admission to Morehouse College, but graduated from University of Illinois at Chicago with a B.S. degree in economics in 1971. As a journalist, Mitchell was a political reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times and metro reporter for the Washington Post where he met Watergate reporters, Woodward and Bernstein. He was the Washington editor for Jet and Ebony magazines and Washington columnist for Black Enterprise magazine. In 1980, he became director of corporate communications for Johnson Products. Chicago Mayor Harold Washington appointed Mitchell his press secretary in 1983. In 1985, Mitchell founded Summit Consulting, Inc., Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Consultancy where he was chairman and CEO. Mitchell served on the boards of Lakefront Supportive Housing, Illinois Humanities Council and the Federation of State Humanities Councils, and was a member of Economics Club of Chicago.;
