520 a| Sculptor and professor Geraldine McCullough was born on December 1, 1917 in Kingston, Arkansas. In 1922, McCullough moved with her family to Chicago. Graduating from Wendell Phillips High School in 1940, she received her B.A. degree from The Art Institute of Chicago 1948 and her M.F.A. degree in art education in 1955. McCullough taught art in the Chicago Public Schools for sixteen years and entered her first piece, "Phoenix", a sculpture, in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Competition in 1965. She then won the George D. Widener Gold Medal. Her other works included Echo 5 and Treeform. Her realistic sculpture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stands at the Illinois Capitol Building. McCullough won the Purchase Award from the Johnson Museum, Cornell University in 1988 and the Oak Park Area Art Council's Joseph Randall Shapiro Award in 2000. McCullough passed away on December 15, 2008 at age 91.;
