After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for five years as an administrative specialist. He enrolled at Rutgers University, earning his B.A. degree in political science in 1973. Starting as a news writer for the Associated Press, he became the copy editor of Muhammad Speaks-Bilalian News in 1974, changing his name to Salim Muwakkil a year later. By 1980, he started working for the U.S. Department of Housing and Development and was also a freelance writer for several publications. In 1984, he became the senior editor of In These Times. In 2007, he was host of the Salim Muwakkil Show on WVON-AM. Muwakkil was author of Harold!, a book chronicling Harold Washington's historic tenure as mayor of Chicago, as well as a contributing author to several other books.;
