520 a| Radiologist Dr. John William Coleman was born December 18, 1920, near Spartanburg, South Carolina. Coleman earned his B. S. degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina; and his M. D. degree from Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee; He interned at Provident Hospital in Chicago as a resident in radiology. He was drafted into the military during World War Two and was able to continue his education until the war ended. He rejoined the military during the Korean War and served in New York state. Coleman, certified in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiology, worked as an attending physician while building a private practice. In 1958, he worked at the West Side Veteran's Administration Hospital. Coleman was instrumental in a 1961 lawsuit to end racial segregation in Chicago hospitals. He continued working with veterans until he retired in 1981. Coleman passed away on December 31, 2004 at age 84.;
