| Abstract | Educator Frances Matlock was born in Chicago on January 6, 1907. She earned an A.A. degree from Chicago Normal College and her B.S. degree in education from Northwestern University in 1951. Matlock's career included work in elementary education in addition to civic and community activism. She taught for Chicago Public Schools from 1933 to 1972. As adviser to the NAACP's Youth Leadership Council from 1935 to 1941, she oversaw early efforts of notables as Margaret Burroughs, Gwendolyn Brooks and John Johnson. She served as a public relations and publicity assistant for the 1932 March on Washington. From 1953 to 1993, she acted as publicity chairman and archivist for the Chicago Chapter of The Links. Matlock was honored with Chicago State University's Golden Alumnus Award and Operation Uplift's Golden Heritage Award. She was inducted into Chicago Senior Citizen's Hall of Fame. Matlock passed away on November 21, 2002 at age 95. |
