Johnson earned his B.A. degree in theater from Roosevelt University and his M.A. degree in theater from Governors State University. His plays include S.C.L.C: Second Coming, Last Chance, The Regal Theater, Kintu and the Law of Love, and Strange Fruit. In 1970, Johnson produced a now-legendary black soap opera, Bird Of The Iron Feather for Chicago's WTTW-TV. Johnson performed in Ron Milner's Checkmates and in films including The Wedding, The Spook Who Sat by the Door and A Raisin In The Sun. Artistic director of the eta Creative Arts Foundation, he taught theater at the college and community level. He received the Paul Robeson Award from the African American Arts Alliance of Chicago. Johnson passed away on April 3, 2012 at age 87.;
